Crested lark
Galerida cristata
CH — Extinct as breeder
CH — Vagrant
The crested lark prefers open, sparsely vegetated areas where it can nest on the ground undisturbed and find a variety of seeds and insects. While such habitats became increasingly rare in the cultural landscape, up until the 1970s the species was also able to occupy unused industrial or railway sites. However, as land has been increasingly intensively managed, developed or sealed over the years, such “wasteland” is now almost impossible to find in this country.
