Animals of Asia
A miscellany
The small gallery displaying a selection of “Animals of Asia” was opened in 1978. These are the last dioramas produced by the taxidermy team of that time in the tradition of the “Animals of Africa” dioramas. Displayed in the cases are dermoplastic exhibits of large mammals from Asia in a carefully reproduced “natural” setting. The adult orangutans come from a colonial context: they were purchased by the museum from animal traders at the end of the 19th century. All the other exhibits are zoo specimens or plastic models complete with skins and hair from a wide variety of animal species — or even human hair.
