Western yellow wagtail

Motacilla flava

CH — Vulnerable

CH — Regular breeder, common migrant

This diorama places the western yellow wagtail in the wrong type of habitat: in Switzerland, from 1947, it initially bred in marshy meadows. Today, this species — adaptable to human activities — is frequently found in potato and turnip fields which are not too densely planted and not disturbed during the breeding season. The birds often accompany grazing cows or sheep, as these animals tend to attract insects — which may explain their German name Schafstelze (Schaf = sheep).
