Animals of the North — shadows of the past
The Animals of the North are part of what was formerly a much bigger exhibition. This began in 1936 with the inauguration of a Large Mammals Hall, featuring an elephant, rhinos and a whale. By 1942, seals, musk oxen, polar bears and seabirds were also on display. From 1960 onwards, numerous changes occurred — the Large Mammals Hall was gradually replaced by new display cases, with bears, moose, caribou and wolves forming a large “Northlands” exhibition. However, from the 1990s, in response to changing requirements, the Museum dismantled many of the dioramas, thus creating space for new types of exhibition.
