Animals of the North — traces of the colonial era
These animals come from Greenland, Alaska, Canada and the Lofoten Islands (Norway) — regions which (like for example the African continent) were occupied by colonial powers. The local populations were subjected to often brutal colonial regimes, which devastated the diverse cultures and livelihoods of indigenous communities. However, their independence and cultural heritage have survived to the present day. The diversity of indigenous societies continues to be widely overlooked — as shown by the persistence of colonial-era stereotypes of “Indians” and “Eskimos”.
