Forests, farmland and deserts up to 2,500 metres above sea level

Biology

Crested porcupines are well able to defend themselves: when they feel threatened, they raise and rattle their quills, growl and hiss. If necessary, they will also charge backwards and drive their tail into a predator. They are not, however, able to shoot their quills like arrows. Although they are primarily herbivores, they may also consume insects, mice or carrion.
