Conservation status

Critically endangered. The species is at risk from loss of its already meagre habitat due to forest clearance, agriculture and development. Other threats include diseases introduced by humans, such as the common cold, and poaching.

Habitat

Mountain forests between 2,200 and 4,000 metres above sea level

Biology

These gentle giants feed mainly on leaves and herbs. They live in groups consisting of one adult male (silverback) and a number of females with their young.
