Hippopotamus

Hippopotamus amphibius
Kiboko (Swahili), Nvubu (Luganda)

Conservation status

Vulnerable. The species — prized for its meat and its ivory tusks — is at risk from poaching and civil wars, which in some areas have brought it to the brink of extinction.

Habitat

Rivers and lakes in rainforests, savannahs and coastal areas

Biology

Hippos usually leave the water only to look for food. They often behave aggressively towards humans and can cause fatal accidents.

Diorama

1984

As hippo skin is not amenable to taxidermic preparation, a model is displayed here. The only natural elements are the bristles on the face, consisting of swan feather quills.
