Conservation status

Endangered. The species is at risk from habitat loss due to forest clearance, agriculture and development, as well as poaching and introduced diseases such as leprosy or tuberculosis.

Savannahs, tropical rainforests

Biology

Chimpanzees’ communication and social behaviour are highly developed. The animals use various tools and medicinal plants, and these skills are passed on to the next generation. They live in mixed groups dominated by adult males. Violent conflicts sometimes occur with other groups of chimpanzees.
