European nightjar

Caprimulgus europaeus

CH — Endangered

CH — Rare breeder

The European nightjar is now found in Switzerland only in the Upper Valais, Ticino and some Alpine valleys of Graubünden. It breeds in sparse pine forests, favouring dry, sandy ground. Its original habitat range has shrunk as a result of urban development and intensive viticulture. A nocturnal hunter, the European nightjar feeds on moths and beetles, which can still be found in near-natural Valais vineyards that manage without pesticides. Also important for insectivores like the nightjar, however, are dry, low-nutrient meadows offering a wide variety of plant and insect life.
