Alaska moose
Alces alces gigas
Conservation status
Least concern
The Alaska moose is only found in Alaska and northwestern Canada; like all moose, it is a member of the deer family. It is larger and heavier than other moose (elk) species found in northern Europe and Asia: some males can have a hoof‑to‑shoulder height of over 2 m and weigh more than 600 kg. Though this species may be preyed on by wolves, bears or other predators, healthy, fully grown moose will rarely be targeted. These animals have virtually no natural enemies and are most at risk from road traffic and hunting.
