Habitat
Desert and semi-desert areas, savannahs

Conservation status
Near threatened. The species is at risk from habitat loss due to agriculture, development and road transport, as well as hunting.

Biology
These creatures live either in stable groups (known as clans) or as solitary nomads. They are predominantly scavengers and use fruit such as watermelons to meet their water requirements during dry periods.
