Conservation status

Vulnerable. Populations are declining sharply. The species is at risk from habitat loss due to cattle farming and introduced diseases such as canine distemper, as well as deliberate poisoning and hunting.

Habitat

Savannahs, dry woodlands, semi-desert areas

Biology

Lions live socially in prides, consisting of a number of related females and cubs, together with one or more usually related males. Fatal attacks by lions on humans and particularly livestock are frequently reported.
