Numerous steps are involved in the creation of a lifelike dermoplastic exhibit — a model of an animal’s body covered with its skin or feathers. The skin is first removed, cleaned and preserved, and the body is then modelled. Initially, models were made of wood, wire mesh and plaster, but today plastics are used.

Capturing not only the animal’s physical dimensions but especially its typical expression requires highly accurate measurements, sketches and models. Only if every detail is correct will the damp skin fit like a glove when it is applied to the “custom-made” artificial body.
