Endangered. The species is at risk from habitat loss due to agriculture and competition with cattle for water, as well as hunting.

Biology

Grévy’s zebra is the largest living wild equid and has the densest pattern of stripes of any zebra species. These animals do not form herds, with close social ties existing only between mares and their foals.

This specimen’s coat shows damage due to ageing: fine cracks can be seen on the flank and neck. The scar on the throat, however, was presumably caused by a bite from a rival.
